House of Fraser
We were involved in the major refurbishment and extension of the town’s House of Fraser department store to provide an additional 30,000 sq.ft. of trading space. The original building, which was Grade II listed, occupied a central position in at the heart of the town centre conservation area.
The scheme – sensitive to the historic context whilst creating a dynamic new retail environment – included a 7 storey high atrium space containing the new feature escalator core. The atrium incorporated a glazed façade and curved barrel vault roof on a steelwork frame. The existing store was also completely refurbished and the original rooftop water garden, designed by renowned landscape architect G.A. Jelicoe, was given a new lease of life as part of a new rooftop restaurant and viewing area.
