Young Epilepsy Bespoke Residential
This was our first project for the Young Epilepsy Charity and we have since worked with them on numerous masterplanning and development projects on their 200 acre greenbelt estate.
For this initial development, we were appointed to design two new bespoke residential units for children with severe and complex learning difficulties, including specialist play and sensory facilities. Design considerations included optimising lighting, temperature control and ventilation to avoid triggering seizures, as well as ensuring a safe internal environment with no projections which could cause injury.
We completed a detailed design project on the layout of a child’s bedroom, including a full scale mock-up of the integrated sink and storage spaces, to balance ease of use with safety. The first phase was assessed in use and feedback taken to inform the design of phase 2. The buildings were very successful, with the phase 2 block described by staff as a near perfect design.
