Royal Visit

HRH The Duke of Kent formally opens The Spike Heritage and Community Building.

Mark Furner of Gerry Lytle Associates was delighted to show the Duke images of the Listed Building before works started, and to talk about the painstaking restoration work carried out.  The former vagrants workhouse had become derelict, overrun with pigeons and suffering from dry rot before The Charlotteville Jubilee Trust appointed Gerry Lytle Associates to undertake the specialist architectural restoration works.

The building works took one year to complete and provided a Heritage Centre, Community Centre, Nursery space and offices.

The Spike building has won The Guildford Society Design Award and the 26th Surrey Industrial History Group Award.

The project was partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Guildford borough Council, with support from English Heritage.
