Planning Permission for Guildford Lido

We are delighted to have recently secured planning consent for the replacement of the changing facilities and a new small café at Guildford Lido, working for Guildford Borough Council in consultation with Freedom Leisure and Friends of Guildford Lido.

Guildford Lido is a popular local venue that was originally opened in 1932. The facilities include a 10 lane, Olympic size swimming pool, gymnasium and gardens. Guildford Borough Council approached Lytle Associates Architects to transform the poolside accommodation for the Lido, introducing brand new changing facilities, showers and a café.

Our proposed scheme is driven by two key goals: to provide a modern new building that respects the historic character of the old Lido, and to create a more accessible and welcoming environment. The heart of the new Lido will be two sweeping timber canopies interspersed with a series of pitched tile clad cupolas. These raised sections of roof are designed to bring natural light and ventilation into the changing spaces. New cubicles containing private changing rooms, family rooms, showering and toilets are then arrayed beneath the canopy, painted in a series of different colours to clearly identify the various uses and create a bright, welcoming space.

The scheme is planned to start on site later this year, and we are all very much looking forward to enjoying the new Lido for many years to come!
